Two dolphins have been found dead on the coast of Lanzarote within hours of each other, in separate incidents reported in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Honda. The discoveries have raised concern after multiple strandings in a short period.

The first was reported on the morning of Sunday, 22nd March, in Puerto del Carmen, after emergency services received an alert about a stranded cetacean on the rocks. When crews arrived, the animal was already dead, and specialists from the Cabildo took over the case.

Emergency teams stood down shortly afterwards, confirming wildlife experts were handling the situation. The incident was formally closed once responsibility was passed to the specialists.

A second dolphin, identified as a common dolphin, was found dead this morning (Monday) at Guacimeta beach in Playa Honda. Volunteer firefighters, Civil Protection and marine biologists attended the beach at around 11:00am.

The animal was recovered and transported for a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death. Experts from a Canary Islands marine research group are now leading the investigation.

While strandings do occur from time to time, two incidents so close together are unusual. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the cases are linked, but monitoring of the situation is expected.

Residents and visitors are reminded not to approach stranded marine animals and to report any sightings to the emergency services.
