Two men have been arrested following a violent mugging in which an Irish holidaymaker was assaulted and robbed of his mobile phone in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 9:00am in a central street of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, when the two suspects, aged 34 and 22, both of Moroccan nationality, allegedly attacked the 32-year-old victim and forcibly stole his mobile phone.
Swift action by the Local Police led to the arrest of the suspects at different locations across the city. The first was detained on Calle Franchy Roca, identified based on physical and clothing descriptions provided by the victim. Then the second was arrested minutes later near the intersection of La Marina and Calle Simón Bolívar, after officers received additional information over police radio.
The victim, an engineer from Ireland working aboard a ship docked in Las Palmas, was able to clearly identify both suspects. He sustained physical injuries during the assault, according to a medical report, and his statement proved key to the rapid resolution of the case.
Both suspects were formally arrested at the scene, informed of their rights, and taken into custody. The case has now been handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for further proceedings.
