A major drug-smuggling operation has been stopped off the coast of Fuerteventura, with 877 kilos of hashish seized and three men arrested after attempting to bring the drugs ashore using a high-speed narco boat.
The arrests were made during a night-time raid on 10th December 2025, following weeks of surveillance by the Guardia Civil. The operation, codenamed ‘Puerto Nuevo’, was launched after critical intelligence was shared by the Directorate General for Territorial Surveillance of Morocco, highlighting suspected trafficking movements towards the Canary Islands.
Investigators tracked a criminal group based on the island whose behaviour pointed to an imminent drug drop. Officers identified a beach on the south of Fuerteventura as the likely landing point and moved in with a specially deployed interception unit.
As night fell, agents spotted a surge in suspicious activity, followed by the approach of an eight-metre high-speed inflatable boat with a rigid hull, powered by an outboard engine. Moments after the drugs were unloaded, a large commercial van was seen fleeing the area at speed.

The vehicle was stopped shortly afterwards, and all three occupants were arrested on the spot.
Inside the van, officers uncovered 23 large wrapped bales containing suspected hashish, weighing approximately 877.1 kilograms. It is one of the biggest single seizures on the island in recent months.
Police also seized two land vehicles, the narco boat, multiple mobile phones, and GPS tracking devices.
The suspects were brought before the court of Puerto del Rosario, which ordered their immediate remand in custody. They have been transferred to the Tahiche Prison in Lanzarote.
