A woman in Lanzarote has recovered her hearing thanks to a groundbreaking ear implant procedure carried out for the first time at the island’s main public hospital.

Specialists at the Hospital Universitario Doctor José Molina Orosa successfully performed an osteointegrated hearing implant on a 39-year-old patient with chronic hearing loss, offering new hope to people who cannot use traditional hearing aids.

The surgery was completed in December and was supported by Jesús Benítez del Rosario, head of the ENT service at the Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín, who travelled to Lanzarote to assist the local team.

Doctors say the technique is minimally invasive and provides major benefits for patients with chronic ear conditions, structural malformations, or intolerance to conventional devices.

The implant works by placing a small titanium fixture into the temporal bone, which connects to an external sound processor. Instead of amplifying sound through the ear canal, it sends gentle vibrations through the bone directly to the inner ear, allowing the cochlea to convert them into signals the brain can interpret.

Following surgery, patients undergo a one-month healing period to allow the implant to integrate with the bone. The external processor is then attached using a magnetic system, restoring clear and stable hearing.

The Lanzarote patient, who suffered from chronic otitis media with tympanosclerosis, is now in the adaptation phase but has already experienced a significant improvement in her hearing.
