The National Police have arrested a man in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria accused of carrying out more than 100 online scams linked to fake holiday let and long-term rental properties advertised on property portals.
The suspect, who has a lengthy criminal record, was already facing around twenty legal claims pending in courts across Spain. According to police sources, he is considered the key figure in an organised group dedicated to large-scale online fraud using rental platforms to deceive victims.
Scam targeting online rental platforms
The investigation began last year after several reports were filed at police stations nationwide, all describing a similar method of fraud. Victims believed they were renting holiday or long-term apartments through legitimate property websites, only to discover that the listings were fake after paying deposits or fees.
By thoroughly analysing the patterns across the various complaints, investigators were able to identify the suspect as the main perpetrator behind over one hundred separate incidents.
Now behind bars
Following his arrest, the man was brought before the courts in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The judge has since ordered his immediate imprisonment while the case progresses.
The National Police continue to remind the public to be cautious when booking properties online, to verify the authenticity of listings, and to avoid making payments without confirming the legitimacy of the rental and its owner.
