The Canary Islands Government has handed over the keys to 50 new affordable rental homes in Ingenio, Gran Canaria, as part of its ongoing efforts to address the region’s housing crisis. The apartments, offered at rental prices of between €450 and €500 per month, around half the market rate, were delivered yesterday by Pablo Rodríguez, the regional minister for Public Works, Housing and Mobility.
“With this development we are giving a much-needed boost to the public housing supply in the southeast of the island,” Rodríguez said. “Ingenio had gone years without new housing, and it was necessary to act. Today, more families can access a dignified, modern and affordable home.”
New strategy to meet housing needs
The project represents the fifth housing handover of this legislative term, and the third in Ingenio. Rodríguez highlighted that the government is pursuing a broad strategy, which includes new construction, rehabilitation of unfinished buildings, and direct purchases, to speed up delivery of affordable housing.
“This policy is transversal and diverse, adapted to the needs of vulnerable families, young people, the elderly, workers and the middle class,” he explained. Many of the homes delivered under this plan are priced up to 50% below market value.
Public housing company Visocan carried out the €6.4 million project using a “turnkey” acquisition system, which involves completing unfinished buildings and adapting them for social use. Two further promotions are already underway in Ingenio: one of 31 homes and another of 15, created by converting a former office building, both expected to be delivered over the next two years.
Local celebration with future plans
The mayor of Ingenio, Vanesa Martín, described the event as “an exciting moment” for the families receiving their keys. “It means beginning a new stage, with the security and stability needed to build a life project,” she said.
However, she also acknowledged that much more needs to be done: “We know this is not enough. Housing is one of the biggest challenges facing this administration. That’s why we remain committed to working in coordination with the Canary Islands Government and other institutions to find solutions. We are already preparing land in La Montañeta, which will allow us to build around 100 more homes in the near future.”
Modern, sustainable housing
The Ingenio development, located on the corner of Calle Rutindana and Calle Tenesoya Vidina, comprises a three-storey building with five entrances and more than 7,800 square metres of constructed space. It includes 38 three-bedroom apartments, 11 with two-bedrooms, and one one-bedroom unit.
All properties come with a garage space, store room, and rooftop laundry, and one unit is fully adapted for people with reduced mobility. The design follows universal accessibility and energy efficiency standards, ensuring both sustainability and a higher quality of life for residents.
