Canaries has the highest hospital occupancy rate from Covid in the whole of Spain

Despite the fact that the death toll from Covid is still high compared to the rest of the pandemic, and February is the second highest month for the most deaths behind January since it began, the number of victims in the islands from the virus is beginning to decrease.

Last week there were 32 deaths from Covid reported in the archipelago, compared to 48 the previous week, which represents a decrease of 33%. This figure, despite still being high, is far from the 78 deaths registered on the islands between January 23rd and 30th, in what was the darkest week of the health crisis in the islands.

The drop in infections, which began in mid-January, is also reflected in the drop in hospitalizations. Yesterday, there were 393 people with an active infection in Canarian health centres, 53 in ICU, and 340 on wards. This is compared to 560 the previous Monday when the split was 73 in ICU and 487 onwards.

However, this favourable evolution could stop if the drop in transmission slows down, which seems likely based on the epidemiological data of the last few days.

Over the last, the have been 7,043 new infections detected by the Ministry of Health, just one less than the 7,044 the previous week. In addition, the 7-day incidence rate has stopped falling and is threatening to rise again. In fact, the IA7 was 19.5 points higher yesterday (267.7) than that recorded last Thursday.

This is also reflected in the number of daily cases, as 659 were reported yesterday which is 61 (10%) more than the previous Monday.

According to the latest epidemiological report issued by the Ministry of Health, the Canary Islands has the sixth-lowest 7-day incidence rate in Spain, behind Andalusia (173), Castilla y La Mancha (178), Madrid (210), the Balearic Islands (256) and the Basque Country (260). However, it has the highest hospital occupancy rate with 28.86 Covid patients admitted per 100,000 inhabitants.
