The national weather agency Aemet is forecasting the arrival of a high-level calima from midday today, Friday, which may bring hazy skies and reduced visibility across parts of the Canary Islands.

The Atlantic is also expected to become choppy in places, with stronger northeasterly winds and rough seas, so anyone heading to beaches or planning activities on the water should take extra care.

In Lanzarote, the day will be mostly bright and sunny. Some thin mid and high-level cloud is expected during the afternoon, creating slightly hazy skies if the calima reaches the island. Temperatures will range from around 17°C overnight to 23°C during the day, with light to moderate northeasterly winds bringing comfortable coastal conditions. Visibility may fall mildly later on, but overall it will remain an excellent day for outdoor plans.

Fuerteventura will also enjoy sunshine for most of the day, with high cloud arriving gradually in the afternoon. A light dust haze may develop at altitude. Temperatures will sit between 18°C and 23°C, feeling particularly warm in the southern areas of the island. Winds from the northeast will be light to moderate, occasionally fresh around exposed beaches. UV levels remain high, so sun protection is recommended for anyone spending extended time outside.

In Gran Canaria, the morning will begin cloudier in the north due to the trade winds, while the south stays largely sunny from early on. As the day progresses, high cloud and slight calima may spread across the island, especially in southern and inland zones. Temperatures in Las Palmas will hover around 22°C, although the southern resorts are likely to climb a little higher. Coastal areas will be breezy, with easterly and southeasterly winds stronger in the highlands. Visitors can expect excellent beach weather in the south, while the north remains cooler and more overcast until the afternoon.

Tenerife will see morning cloud in the north and southwest, while the rest of the island starts off clearer with good sunshine, particularly in popular resorts such as Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas. As the afternoon and evening approach, cloud cover will increase and there may be some very light rain in higher areas, including the slopes of Mount Teide. Temperatures will stay fairly steady, around 18°C to 21°C in Santa Cruz and possibly 23°C or 24°C in the south. Northeasterly winds on the coasts may feel strong at times in the southeast before easing later in the day, while inland areas will see winds shift to an easterly or southeasterly direction.

At sea, conditions will be lively around the archipelago. Northeasterly winds will freshen temporarily, reaching force 6 in areas such as the southeast and the far northwest. Strong swell is expected in exposed zones, although western coasts will remain much calmer.

Residents and visitors should be aware that calima may lead to a drop in air quality, especially for those with asthma or respiratory conditions. Haze could also affect visibility on higher roads. Staying hydrated and protecting eyes and skin from both dust and UV is advisable, especially if the haze thickens later in the day.
