The Canary Islands continue under a coastal pre-alert today, Monday, with waves forecast to reach up to four metres during high tide, particularly along northern and western shores.
The Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES) confirmed that the alert for adverse coastal conditions remains active, with the most dangerous period expected around 3:30pm, coinciding with high tide.
According to the Directorate General of Emergencies, the warning applies to the north coast of Gran Canaria and the north and west coasts of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The advisory was updated at midday on Monday and will remain in force as rough seas continue to affect the region.
Heightened Caution After Tenerife Tragedy
This renewed call for caution comes just 24 hours after the tragedy at Isla Cangrejo, in Santiago del Teide (Tenerife), where four people died and one remains missing after being swept into the sea by powerful waves at a natural pool that had been closed due to rough sea conditions.
The accident occurred shortly after Sunday’s high tide, in an area that had been fenced off and clearly marked as dangerous, yet was accessed by around 20 swimmers and tourists.
Authorities Urge Residents and Tourists to Stay Away from the Coast
Weather forecasts indicate a combination of swell and wave surges between 2.5 and 4 metres, making open coastal areas particularly hazardous.
Through official social media channels, the Government of the Canary Islands reminded the public: “Do not approach areas where waves break and follow the instructions of the authorities. Don’t let your guard down.”
Officials also emphasise the importance of avoiding piers, breakwaters, and isolated coastal points during high tide, even when the sea may appear calm.
Emergency services across the islands are maintaining enhanced surveillance and prevention operations, urging both residents and visitors to exercise maximum caution near the coast.
As authorities stress, the Atlantic’s power should never be underestimated, and a moment’s curiosity can have deadly consequences.
