Thieves have stolen jewellery worth an estimated €20,000 from a shop in Puerto de Santiago, in the coastal area of Santiago del Teide (Tenerife), after allegedly using a distraction trick to outsmart staff and escape with the items.

The incident happened on Saturday and was later reported to the Guardia Civil, who have launched an investigation and are now trying to identify, find and arrest those responsible.

According to reports, several people entered the store and worked together to divert the employees’ attention. While staff were distracted, the group is believed to have grabbed multiple pieces of jewellery and fled the premises before anyone could stop them.

Because of the nature of the theft, the case has been taken on by the Investigation Unit based at the Guardia Civil’s main post in Guía de Isora. Officers are continuing enquiries and have been reviewing the shop’s internal CCTV footage in the hope of tracking down the suspects.

The theft happened at a Te Quiero jewellery store, which was the same chain that faced serious trouble more than a decade ago, when its shops across Tenerife were repeatedly targeted in robberies and thefts.

The most serious case took place around 15 years ago, when a group of men allegedly kidnapped the chain’s then-owner from a rural property in the upper part of Candelaria. He was reportedly taken to a house in the Anaga area, where he was violently assaulted. A fire was also said to have destroyed his Volkswagen van. The businessman later managed to escape, reported the attack, and the Guardia Civil eventually arrested those responsible.

For now, investigators are focused on the latest theft in Puerto de Santiago as they work through surveillance footage and enquiries to find the people behind the raid.
