Covid update: 116 new cases today but all islands stay at Level 1

Covid update: 116 new cases today but all islands stay at Level 1

After reviewing the epidemiological report of the General Directorate of Public Health Committee, the Ministry of Health has decided to keep all of the islands at alert level 1 for Covid-19 for the third consecutive week, despite an increase in daily cases, incidence rates, active cases, and the R rate of contagion over the last few days in the archipelago.

Between October 27th and November 2nd, there were 555 new cases of COVID reported in the Canary Islands, representing a decrease of around 4.3% in the daily average of new cases compared to the previous week (from October 20th to 26th), in which 580 cases were registered.

Despite this decrease, the average 7-day incidence rate in the Canary Islands as a whole, and by island individually, increased by 11.3%, so that, from a daily average of 24.80 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, it went to 27.60 cases in this last week.

By islands, Lanzarote is at a medium risk level and El Hierro at a very low-risk level, while Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, La Palma, and La Gomera have oscillated between medium and low risk.

Meanwhile, this same trend is observed in the 14-day incidence rates as well, whose daily average has increased to a greater or lesser extent in all the islands, so that the whole of the archipelago is at medium risk in this indicator.

HOSPITAL PRESSURE:
Regarding the care indicators, the daily average of hospital beds in wards occupied during the last week by COVID patients was 80, which is only 2.6% more than the previous week, although in all the islands the percentage of occupation is at a very low-risk level, except for La Palma, which is at low risk.

In addition, the number of occupied ICU beds is consolidating the decline that began more than 2 months ago, with 17 occupied, one less than two weeks ago. The median age of all the people hospitalized for COVID-19 in the last 14 days is 63 years old, while the median age of the 5 people admitted to the ICU in the last 14 days is 54 years old.

Finally, the cumulative incidence rate of COVID-19 cases in the last week is 3.2 times higher in the population that has not received any vaccine, compared to the rate in the population that has been fully vaccinated. This means that the 7-day incidence rate for unvaccinated people is 52.3 and for those have been vaccinated it is only 16.2.
