A 20-year-old man who was reported missing in the Canary Islands is under investigation by the National Police after allegedly faking his own kidnapping in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
His supposed disappearance sparked concern among family and friends and was widely shared across the media and social networks.
According to a statement from the National Police, the case began on 3rd September 2025, when the young man’s relatives reported losing contact with him since 30th August.
However, the following day, 4th September, the man appeared at a police station claiming he had been held against his will for five days in a property in the La Isleta district. He even identified three alleged captors and reported that a bracelet had been stolen during his ordeal.
Investigators carried out multiple checks, including taking statements from witnesses who had seen the young man before and after his alleged disappearance.
After analysing the evidence and testimonies, officers concluded that the kidnapping story was false and that the man had voluntarily stayed at a friend’s home during the period in question.
The investigation concluded on 30th September, and the man was summoned to give a formal statement as a suspect, though not arrested, for the crime of filing a false report. The case has now been referred to the relevant judicial authorities.
The National Police have reminded the public that filing false reports or simulating crimes is a serious offence, as it wastes vital investigative resources and can cause unnecessary public alarm. Submitting a report while knowing the facts are untrue, or providing false information, may result in criminal and civil liability.
