The Canary Islands Government has approved an amendment to the second phase of the La Aldea road project in Gran Canaria, unlocking an additional €28.2 million to push the works into their final stage. The goal is for 80% of the route to be open to traffic by 2027, significantly improving safety and travel times along one of the island’s most challenging stretches.
Construction of the La Palma viaduct, measuring 110 metres long and 28 metres high, will begin this month, November, while work on the larger El Risco viaduct, which will span 571 metres and reach 88 metres in height, is set to start in December. The latter has an estimated construction period of 30 months.
According to the regional Minister for Public Works, Pablo Rodríguez, this marks “a key step” in completing the new road between Agaete and La Aldea de San Nicolás, a route that includes nine tunnels and two viaducts over a total length of 8.5 kilometres, with 5.7 kilometres running underground.
Once the new section between Agaete and the Faneque tunnel opens, travel time will drop from around 20 minutes to just five, connecting directly to the already operational tunnel and the road towards El Risco, completing the full journey in approximately nine minutes.
“This project will not only reduce travel times by about 15 minutes,” Rodríguez explained, “but also remove high-risk points and greatly improve safety and comfort for drivers.”

The government expects the entire Agaete–La Aldea highway to be fully operational by 2028, marking the end of years of complex administrative procedures and delays.
Rodríguez stressed that this investment is essential to boost mobility in Gran Canaria, particularly for residents of La Aldea, and assured that the works are progressing “according to technical and financial planning,” with a growing portion of the route already completed.
