A woman has died after drowning at the beach near the Maspalomas Lighthouse, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, according to reports from the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The incident happened at around 2:00pm yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), when lifeguards from the Red Cross were alerted to the presence of a woman floating in the sea and promptly went into the water rescued her.

Upon discovering that she was in cardiac arrest, they immediately began CPR until the emergency services arrived at the beach.

Shortly after, an emergency helicopter dispatched by CECOES landed near the Charca de Maspalomas, where SUC medical personnel, along with staff from the Maspalomas health centre, continued advanced resuscitation efforts.
