Onlookers and parents were left shocked on Sunday night when the safety cable on one of the ‘big’ rides at a funfair in Gran Canaria snapped as it was being used by families with children, on the day that prices were reduced to 1 and 2 euros per ride to encourage them to use them.
The ‘V’ ride is a mini roller coaster that is pulled back into the air and then released to go forwards and backward with gravity, and is there as part of the fiestas in Vecindario.
As you can see and hear in the video, the moment the cable snapped was captured on film, causing panic among onlookers, but fortunately no one was injured as the emergency services intervened to get everyone off the ride safely.
It’s the second time this year that one of the rides at a local fiesta has had a breakdown after a fayre worker was killed in Tenerife after the failure of an ‘Octopus’ ride he was working on.
The safety of the funfairs is now being brought into question and authorities are demanding stricter safety regulations for their installation and use at local fiestas.
