VIDEO: Bathers battle to save child who is dragged out to sea

The sea is the most inviting place at the moment due to the extreme temperatures being experienced in the Canary Islands, but as well as alerts and warnings for heat (which have been extended until the end of this week), there are also active warnings for dangerous seas due to adverse ‘coastal phenomena’.

These warnings are for strong currents, deep swells, and big waves and have led to numerous beaches across the islands having red flags for people to take extreme caution if going into the water.

Unfortunately, not everyone seems to take notice of these warnings as highlighted yesterday when an incident was caught on camera involving a young child who need rescuing by a lifeguard and other bathers in Playa de Arinaga in Gran Canaria, who prevented a tragedy.

As you can see by the strength of the sea, people shouldn’t have been going in there in the first place as it is obviously too dangerous, especially for a young child.

The authorities continue to request that people observe flags on beaches and bathing areas and don’t go into the water if it is not necessary.
