UD LAS PALMAS ARE PROMOTED TO LA LIGA

With a frantic final match of the season, UD Las Palmas did enough with a draw against Alaves to finish second in the league and gain automatic promotion to the top flight in Spanish football, La Liga.

At the start of the day, it was possible for Levante, Eibar, Alaves, or Las Palmas to finish in second place in the table and join Granada with promotion, but Las Palmas had their destiny in their own hands as it was second against third in the table for the ultimate prize.

The yellows of Gran Canaria only needed a draw to guarantee promotion, but it was obvious from the off that they wanted to finish the season with a win and the ultimate high in front of a capacity crowd at home, but ultimately it was a nervy performance and a nail-biting finish.

Levante did their best to ruin Las Palmas’s dreams with a 94th minute winner against Real Oviedo, but it wasn’t enough and they finish 3rd in the LaLiga Smartbank table behind the Gran Canarian team thanks to an inferior goal difference.

Eibar did their best with a 1-0 away win at Huesca to leave them in 5th position on 71 points with Alaves, who finished 4thrd thanks to a superior goal difference and will be in the playoffs with Levante, and Albacete who finished 6th after beating Mirandes 2-1.

Canarian rivals, CD Tenerife, finally finished 10th in the league after a topsy-turvy centenary year that saw a new chairman, manager Ramis decide to leave at the end of the season, but lots of positivity heading into next season.

This is a fantastic achievement for Las Palmas who have been one of the form teams all season, capitalising on the disappointment of losing in the playoffs last year.
