A man has tragically died following a crash in which his vehicle overturned on the southern carriageway of the GC-1 motorway of Gran Canaria near the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana.
The accident occurred at midday yesterday, Monday, with emergency services confirming his death at the scene.
The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) reported that they received an alert shortly after 1:00pm. The incident was described as a vehicle losing control and overturning at kilometre 28 on the southbound carriageway towards Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
First responders from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium arrived promptly, found the driver in cardiac arrest, and performed initial resuscitation attempts on-site.
Upon arrival, SUC paramedics took over and initiated advanced measures, but, despite their efforts, they couldn’t revive him and the driver’s death was confirmed at the scene.
Authorities have not disclosed the age or identity of the victim.
This accident adds to the growing concern over road safety in the Canary Islands, as authorities continue to address issues contributing to accidents on the region's roads. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
