The ex-chef of a bar is arrested for stealing 430,000 euros from the owners

The National Police have arrested a 36-year-old man who is accused of two robberies stealing a total of 430,000 euros in cash from the owners of a well-known bar restaurant where he worked as a chef.

He initially stole 50,000 euros from the bar premises in the port area of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, and the rest (380,000 euros) from the owner's house in a separate burglary.

On April 30th, the National Police received a denuncia (official complaint) from the owner of the bar-cafeteria, claiming that 50,000 euros in cash had been stolen from one of the rooms of the premises, which is only accessible by employees.

Fearing that more could be stolen from the bar, she hid the rest of the money (380,000 euros in cash) at her own home, which was burgled a few days later.

The police opened an investigation focusing on a former employee who had worked at the bar until a few months before. Finally this week, after obtaining a court order, they were able to search the home of the ex-chef in the municipality of Arucas, where they found the money hidden in the false bottom of a bedside table.

Following this, the 36-year-old was arrested and charged with two counts of theft and has been handed over to the Judicial Authority awaiting trial.
