Teenage girl fighting for life after boyfriend sets her on fire in Gran Canaria
A shocking case of gender-based violence is under investigation in Gran Canaria after a 17-year-old girl was set on fire by her 20-year-old boyfriend in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday).
The incident took place on Calle Roque Nublo, in the neighbourhood of La Isleta. The emergency services were dispatched after receiving an alert, and SUC medical personnel rushed to the scene and transferred the young woman to the Doctor Negrín University Hospital in Las Palmas, where she remains in a critical condition due to severe burns.
The boyfriend has been taken into custody for questioning as both the National Police and Local Police are working to clarify exactly what happened, treating the case as a suspected crime of gender-based violence.
Authorities have stressed the seriousness of the attack, which comes amid broader concerns over the support and protection offered to victims of domestic violence in the Canary Islands.
