Several people, including three young children, were injured following a serious road traffic accident in Gran Canaria on Wednesday afternoon, on Avenida del Atlántico, a major road running through the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, in the south of the island.
It happened near the Vecindario Aeropuerto Hotel, a well-known local landmark, and involved two vehicles travelling in the southbound direction.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene, including paramedics, firefighters, and officers from the Local Police. One of the cars, a family vehicle, was being driven by a father who was travelling with his three children at the time of the incident. All four occupants sustained minor injuries in the crash.
However, the front-seat passenger, believed to be one of the adults, became trapped as a result of the collision and had to be carefully freed by firefighters. Authorities confirmed that the passenger was immobilised before being safely removed from the vehicle and taken for medical assessment.
The impact of the crash was severe enough to force one of the vehicles off the road, where it struck a palm tree. The tree was later removed by municipal workers to clear the area and ensure the safety of other road users.
Local Police in Santa Lucía de Tirajana are leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officers have begun gathering witness statements and reviewing traffic camera footage in an effort to determine how the accident occurred.
The incident caused some disruption to traffic in the area, but the road was later reopened once emergency services had cleared the scene.
