New ferry boosts connectivity between Morro Jable and Las Palmas

The Barlovento Express, a new fast ferry operated by Fred. Olsen, has commenced service between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Morro Jable, Fuerteventura. The ferry made its inaugural journey on Sunday, (December 29th), departing from the Gran Canaria capital at 5:00pm.

This state-of-the-art vessel, with a capacity of 866 passengers, 271 vehicles, and facilities for pets, aims to enhance one of the archipelago's most popular maritime routes.

The Barlovento Express joins the existing Betancuria Express on this route, increasing the frequency and capacity of services connecting the south of Fuerteventura with Gran Canaria. Fred. Olsen Express now operates a fleet of 13 vessels, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining strong inter-island connections.

Juan Ignacio Liaño, Fleet Director of Fred. Olsen, highlighted the importance of the new ferry, saying: “With the Barlovento Express, we aim to strengthen one of our most in-demand routes, ensuring year-round availability for residents and visitors. This addition allows us to increase capacity and further guarantee reliable maritime connections across the Canary Islands.”

Improved Facilities for Passengers and Vehicles

The ferry's updated facilities include modernised passenger areas and a spacious garage for vehicles. Liaño emphasised that these upgrades were completed in record time, with further enhancements planned for 2025. The goal is to ensure a comfortable and flexible travel experience for both residents and tourists.

“We are dedicated to providing a high-quality service that offers convenience and availability, making it easier than ever to travel between islands,” Liaño added.

The addition of the Barlovento Express not only addresses growing demand but also highlights Fred. Olsen Express’s role in fostering cohesion across the Canary Islands. By improving accessibility and enhancing travel options, the company continues to support the region’s economy and tourism industry.

The Barlovento Express is expected to play a vital role in meeting the transportation needs of the archipelago, offering a seamless and efficient link between Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria.
