A 40-year-old man is under investigation by the Guardia Civil after allegedly running over a motorcyclist in Agüimes, dragging him for 700 metres beneath his car, and then fleeing the scene.

The victim is a 49-year-old man who remains in a critical condition in hospital.

The shocking incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, on the GC-191 road towards Arinaga. The unlicensed driver, with previous offences for road safety, hit the motorcyclist from behind with a green Toyota Corolla.

The rider became trapped underneath the vehicle and was dragged along the road until the car collided with a traffic light. Instead of stopping, the driver reversed and ran over the victim again before speeding away, leaving him seriously injured on the road.

Emergency services rushed the man to Hospital Insular in Las Palmas, where he was admitted with multiple injuries, including broken ribs, damage to his liver and lungs, and severe burns to his hands caused by clinging to the exhaust pipe as he was dragged. He is expected to undergo surgery.

For four days, the driver remained on the run, hiding the damaged vehicle on a relative’s property in Agüimes. The Guardia Civil’s traffic investigation unit, working with information provided by the victim’s family and members of the public, eventually located the car on Thursday evening. Officers confirmed it was the vehicle involved after finding pieces of the victim’s gloves still stuck to the exhaust.

The Guardia Civil is investigating the suspect for offences including causing injury and fleeing the scene of an accident. The motive behind the brutal incident remains unclear.

The victim’s family, who appealed for help on social media, have thanked the public for their support. “He almost killed him, and this could have happened to anyone. We are just grateful for everyone who came forward and helped us find him,” they said.
