A 19-year-old Moroccan man, Abarrafia H., has been arrested for the brutal attack on a teenage girl in Gran Canaria yesterday (Wednesday), which left her with burns on 95% of her body. He is currently in custody awaiting a court appearance.

He arrived in the Canary Islands by migrant boat in early June, landing in Arrecife, Lanzarote, where Maritime Rescue retrieved him at sea. As he lacked legal documentation, a deportation order was issued, though it was still pending appeal.

While awaiting proceedings, he was placed at a temporary reception centre located at the former Canarias 50 military base in La Isleta, just metres from where the incident occurred. According to sources, he had freedom of movement and regularly came and went from the facility.

The assault took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning on Calle La Angostura in La Isleta, where emergency services found the girl critically injured following a fire. The investigation led to the arrest of Abarrafia H., who is now facing serious charges.

The victim is still in critical condition in hospital.
