AEMET has issued updated weather warnings for the Canary Islands this week, with five islands placed under yellow alerts for strong winds and rough seas until at least Wednesday.
The warnings were updated yesterday, Monday, extending a previous alert and adding another as strengthening trade winds are expected to bring gusty conditions and choppy waters across parts of the archipelago.
Tenerife
Tenerife is under a yellow warning for strong winds until at least 11:59pm on Wednesday (11th March). The alert affects the east, south and west of the island, where trade wind gusts could reach 70 km/h or more, particularly on the northwest and southeast slopes.
A second yellow alert for coastal conditions remains in place until 11:59pm tonight (Tuesday 10th March). It affects the east, south and west coasts, with northeast winds of 50–61 km/h (force 7) expected in the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria also faces a yellow wind warning through to Wednesday night, affecting the east, south and west of the island as well as the higher areas. Gusts of around 70 km/h are expected, particularly on the western and southeastern slopes and in higher areas such as Artenara.
The island is also under a yellow alert for rough seas until later on tonight, Tuesday, with strong northeast winds forecast in the channel between Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
La Palma
La Palma is under a yellow wind alert until Wednesday night, affecting the island’s high ground and western slopes. Gusts of 70 km/h or more are expected, particularly in the northwest and southern areas, including El Paso.
A coastal warning will also apply from until 11am this morning, Tuesday, affecting the western coast with strong northeast winds forecast in the channel between La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
El Hierro
El Hierro will see a yellow warning for strong winds until late Wednesday, affecting the northeast, El Pinar and summit areas where gusts could reach 70 km/h.
A separate coastal warning will also be in force until 11am today, with northeast winds of 50–61 km/h (force 7) expected across surrounding waters.
La Gomera
La Gomera is also included in the yellow wind alert until Wednesday night, particularly affecting eastern areas and higher ground where gusts may reach 70 km/h.
The island will also experience rough sea conditions until 11am Tuesday, with strong northeast winds forecast in the surrounding channel shared with La Palma and El Hierro.
Authorities advise residents and visitors to take care in exposed areas, particularly in coastal zones and higher ground, where gusty winds and rough seas may create hazardous conditions.
