Man falls to his death from hotel rooftop while taking selfie

A 48-year-old man has died after falling from the rooftop of a hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning, while reportedly attempting to take a selfie.

The incident occurred around 1:30a.m. at a hotel bar in the La Puntilla area of Las Canteras in Gran Canaria, a popular section of the beachfront promenade in Las Palmas.

According to police sources cited by the EFE News Agency, the man, who was a resident of the Canary Islands, had climbed onto the railing of the rooftop terrace in an apparent attempt to take a photo. Allegedly, he lost his balance and fell from the eighth floor to the promenade below.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead upon their arrival. He had been accompanied by a friend at the time of the accident.

The incident highlights the growing dangers associated with risky selfie-taking behaviour. The Canary Islands, like many tourist destinations worldwide, have seen an increase in accidents linked to people placing themselves in hazardous situations to take dramatic photos or videos.

This tragic death serves as a sobering reminder of the real dangers posed by such actions. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and avoid putting themselves at risk for photographs, particularly in elevated, unstable, or coastal locations.
