Man dies after banging his head on rocks in the sea by La Laja beach

An unidentified man, thought to be a tourist, died yesterday afternoon (Sunday) after being retrieved from the sea after he was spotted floating face down in cardiorespiratory arrest off La Laja beach, in Gran Canaria, as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The incident occurred shortly after 2:30pm when the 1-1-2 call centre received an alert informing that a person had suffered a bang to the head in an area of rocks and was floating face down in the sea.

Local surfers nearby retrieved the affected person from the water and after verifying that he was in cardiorespiratory arrest due to swallowing water proceeded to give him CPR following instructions by telephone from an SUC nurse in the call centre.

In the meantime, CECOES dispatched paramedics to the beach who took over as soon as they got there, applying advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres, unfortunately without any results and could only confirm the man’s death.

The police then made the relevant reports and guarded the body until permission was given to remove it for official identification and autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
