A 40-year-old delivery driver is in a critical condition after suffering serious injuries when a pallet carrying beer barrels fell on him in Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria.

The incident occurred on Avenida de Gran Canaria, one of the busiest streets in the popular southern tourist resort, which is lined with shops, bars, and restaurants and is frequently used for deliveries.

Witnesses reported that the man had been unloading the goods when part of the heavy load slipped and collapsed onto him, leaving him trapped and badly injured.

Emergency response

The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) immediately dispatched resources to the scene, where SUC paramedics provided first aid and stabilised the victim, who had sustained a severe leg injury described as being of a “serious nature”. Due to the extent of his injuries, he was transferred in a medicalised ambulance to Hospiten Roca, a private hospital in San Agustín.

Firefighters from the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Fire and Rescue Service also attended, assisting in securing the area and ensuring the damaged pallet and barrels were made safe. Local Police officers cordoned off part of the street while they carried out the necessary reports and began investigating the circumstances of the accident.

A busy tourist area

Avenida de Gran Canaria is a key thoroughfare in Playa del Inglés, one of Gran Canaria’s most popular holiday destinations. The area is frequently crowded with tourists, especially in summer, and delivery lorries are a common sight as they supply the hundreds of hotels, bars, and supermarkets that operate in the municipality.

Although the accident happened during a routine delivery, it caused shock among passers-by, many of whom stopped to watch as emergency crews worked to free and treat the injured man.

Condition of the victim

As of Tuesday evening, the man remained in a critical condition in hospital. Authorities have not yet released further details on his prognosis.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by workers in the hospitality and logistics sector, particularly in the Canary Islands’ busiest tourist zones, where demand for supplies is high and heavy loads are moved daily.

Police have confirmed that an official investigation is underway to determine exactly how the accident occurred and whether any safety failures were involved.
