A man with a criminal record and no driving licence was arrested in the early hours of this morning (Friday) after a high-speed police chase through the streets of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that ended with him smashing into 15 parked cars.
Officers from the Local Police tried to stop the vehicle on Calle Primero de Mayo after spotting it travelling at high speed, but the driver ignored repeated orders to pull over and sped off, causing a dangerous pursuit through the city.
The chase tore through the GC-110, El Batán and Vegueta districts, with the suspect driving recklessly and narrowly avoiding several collisions before officers from the UE-GOIA rapid response unit managed to box him in and bring the chaos to an end on Calle Corregidor Aguirre.
When the car was finally stopped, police discovered it had been reported stolen in the municipality of Mogán. The driver fought violently to resist arrest but was eventually subdued and detained.
Inside the vehicle, officers found more than €300 in cash, a 14-centimetre knife, and a screwdriver. Investigators now believe the car had been used earlier to carry out a violent robbery against a holidaymaker in Mogán.
The man was handed over to the National Police and remains in custody as the case is passed to the judicial authorities.
