A man has been arrested in Vecindario, southern Gran Canaria, after allegedly abandoning a dog inside an underground rubbish container, in a shocking case of animal cruelty.

The dog, now known as Patuco, was found alive but in critical condition on Thursday (10th July) inside a bin on Calle Felipe. The rescue was made possible by a local woman walking her dog, who heard cries from the container after a neighbour alerted her.

Although the Local Police initially found no signs of life, the woman returned with nearby residents and a waste collection worker, who used a specialist lorry to access the underground bin. Inside, buried beneath bags of rubbish, they found the suffering dog.

The woman’s niece bravely climbed into the bin and rescued Patuco, who was showing clear signs of neglect and distress. He was taken to an animal shelter in Santa Lucía and later transferred to a veterinary clinic, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

The case has now been taken over by SEPRONA, the Guardia Civil’s environmental unit, and despite the dog not having a microchip, officers were able to identify and arrest a suspect, thanks to public cooperation.

The Guardia Civil has publicly praised the bravery and determination of the woman and her neighbours, whose actions not only saved the dog’s life but also led to the suspect being brought to justice.
