Man arrested after robbery of taxi driver at knifepoint is caught on dashcam

A man has been arrested after a taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with the entire incident caught on a dashcam.

The 56-year-old suspect, who already has a criminal record, was detained by the National Police over the violent robbery, which took place on 12th April.

According to police, the man and another passenger flagged down a taxi in the city and gave the driver a destination. Partway through the journey, they asked to be taken to a more remote area.

Once they arrived, one of the men pulled out a sharp object, believed to be a knife, and threatened the driver, demanding the cash he had collected that day.

The driver managed to flee during a brief moment of distraction and raised the alarm. Crucially, the taxi was fitted with a dashcam, which captured the entire sequence of events.

Footage from the camera helped investigators identify the suspect, who was arrested on 9th May. He has since been handed over to the judicial authorities.

Police say the recording system was key to securing a swift arrest and are encouraging other drivers to install similar devices for their own protection.
