Major roadworks to disrupt traffic in Gran Canaria for several weeks
Drivers in Gran Canaria are set to face disruption from mid-April as a key road link near Arucas is closing for major upgrade works. The changes form part of ongoing improvements to one of the island’s busiest access routes and will last for several weeks forcing motorists to alter their usual journeys during a particularly busy period.
From 13th April, the entry slip road towards Santidad connecting the GC-20 to the GC-300 will be temporarily closed as work continues on the Arucas bypass project.
The works are focused on a section of the GC-20 between kilometre points 3+400 and 4+870, where significant upgrades are being carried out to improve traffic flow and road safety.
The closure is necessary to allow progress on the construction of a new roundabout at one of the main access points to Arucas, known locally as the Cruz Roja roundabout.
Diversions in place
Drivers heading to Santidad will need to follow clearly signposted alternative routes during the closure.
One of the main diversion options will be via the Santidad-Cardones semi-junction, accessing from the GC-3 towards Arucas-Firgas and continuing along Avenida Pedro Morales Déniz.
Another alternative is the GC-43, also known as the Visvique road, which links back to the GC-300 (Los Castillos road), allowing access to the affected area.
Around 40 days of disruption
The diversion phase is expected to last around 40 days. During this time, works will include essential drainage connections to a nearby ravine channel, forming a key part of the wider bypass development.
Authorities, including the Directorate General for Road Infrastructure, are urging motorists to take extra care, follow temporary signage, and plan journeys in advance.
The aim is to minimise disruption while ensuring safety for both road users and construction workers as the project moves forward.
