A 23-year-old man was rescued by helicopter on Wednesday evening after falling from a cliff near El Puertillo beach in the municipality of Arucas (Gran Canaria). The man, who suffered a leg injury, was airlifted to the Doctor Negrín University Hospital in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for treatment.
The emergency occurred at around 8:00pm, when the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received a call reporting that a person had fallen in a difficult-to-access area and required urgent medical assistance.
Complex Rescue Operation
Firefighters arrived first and confirmed that the terrain made the rescue extremely challenging, and requested air support. A maritime rescue helicopter was deployed to hoist the injured man and fly him directly to the hospital’s helipad.
Once landed, paramedics assessed his condition and stabilised him before he was taken by ambulance to the hospital’s emergency department.
Coordinated Emergency Response
According to the SUC’s preliminary report, the young man sustained a moderate leg trauma. The operation also involved two basic life-support ambulances and officers from the Local Police, who helped secure the area and facilitate the rescue.
Authorities have once again reminded the public to exercise caution when walking or climbing near cliffs and rocky coastal areas, as rescues in these zones are often complex and high-risk.
