Guardia Civil officers in Lanzarote have been left without working toilets for over two months, all because of a shortage of basic cleaning supplies.
Both of the station’s toilets are now shut and have been taped off at the Traffic Division in Arrecife…
The company responsible for cleaning services hasn’t delivered the products needed to keep them sanitary, leaving the officers without access to proper facilities.
Now, they have no choice but to leave the police station and go elsewhere, either to public toilets or other locations, just to use relieve themselves. The professional association Independientes de la Guardia Civil (IGC) says the situation is not only unacceptable but also a health risk.
“This is a humiliating situation for public servants,” said IGC spokesperson Daniel Fernández. “No one should be expected to work without access to a toilet. It’s a breach of workplace safety laws and puts people’s health at risk.”
The affected toilets are in the main office area and the locker rooms, but according to the IGC, the problem doesn’t stop there. The lack of cleaning has attracted cockroaches and other pests, making conditions even more unhygienic.
The IGC is demanding that cleaning supplies be delivered straight away, the toilets reopened, and hygiene standards at the station thoroughly reviewed. The association points out that the current situation violates workplace health and safety laws, which requires facilities to provide clean, safe working conditions.
