Police have arrested a man in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria accused of violently robbing an elderly resident shortly after he withdrew over €300 from a cash machine.
The suspect, now facing charges of robbery with violence and intimidation, was detained thanks to the swift actions of bystanders.
The incident took place on July 10th and involved a man in his 80s who was targeted after making a cash withdrawal. The suspect is reported to have watched the man at the ATM before following him to the entrance of his apartment block.
Once inside the building, the assailant physically attacked the victim and stole the cash he had just withdrawn. Witnesses who saw what happened reacted immediately, calling the emergency services and managing to restrain the suspect until officers from the National Police arrived on the scene.
Thanks to their intervention, the suspect was arrested on the spot, and the victim was given medical attention by police officers, who confirmed he was not seriously injured. A search of the suspect revealed the stolen money, which was returned in full to the elderly man.
