A luxury cruise ship heading for the Canary Islands has been hit by a hantavirus outbreak that has left three people dead, raising concerns for passengers and authorities. The vessel is currently in Cape Verde, with the islands listed as its final destination.
The outbreak was confirmed by the World Health Organization, which reported a total of six confirmed cases on board the MV Hondius. Of those, three have died and one remains in intensive care in South Africa, while five additional suspected cases are being investigated.
The ship departed from Ushuaia in Argentina and was en route across the Atlantic when the outbreak was detected. Health officials are now carrying out detailed investigations, including laboratory testing and epidemiological analysis, to understand how the virus spread.
Medical teams are providing care and support to both passengers and crew, while efforts are underway to medically evacuate two symptomatic passengers. Authorities are also assessing the wider public health risk and coordinating with the ship’s operators and international partners.
Hantavirus infections are typically linked to contact with infected rodents, particularly through exposure to their urine, saliva or droppings. Although rare, the virus can also spread between people and may lead to severe respiratory illness requiring close monitoring and specialist care.
Early symptoms include fever, chills, headaches and muscle pain, often followed by breathing difficulties, a rapid heart rate and extreme fatigue. As the illness progresses, it can cause fluid build-up in the lungs and severe chest tightness.
Symptoms usually appear between four and ten days after infection and can worsen quickly. In serious cases, the virus can lead to kidney failure, with additional effects such as nausea, low blood pressure and blurred vision. Health experts warn that up to 40% of diagnosed cases can be fatal.
There are currently no confirmed details on when or where the MV Hondius will arrive in the Canary Islands. With the health situation still unfolding on board, any planned stop could be delayed, diverted, or cancelled altogether, depending on ongoing medical assessments and decisions by port and public health authorities.
Passengers due to travel on cruise ships arriving in the Canary Islands are advised to stay informed and follow any guidance issued by health authorities. Anyone experiencing symptoms after recent travel should seek medical advice immediately.
