The Tenerife Cabildo has announced that the Altavista Mountain Refuge, located high on the slopes of Mount Teide, will reopen this summer after being closed since 2020.
Bookings for the long-awaited reopening open from today, Thursday 9th July, with the refuge welcoming its first overnight guests from 20th August.
Speaking after the island government's weekly meeting, Cabildo President Rosa Dávila confirmed that the online booking platform would go live today, allowing hikers to reserve their stay ahead of the reopening.
The refurbished refuge has 40 beds for visitors looking to spend the night before climbing Spain's highest peak.
Prices Announced
The Cabildo has confirmed the following overnight rates:
- €29 for residents of Tenerife.
- €56.80 for members of recognised mountaineering federations.
- €71 standard rate for other visitors.
Modernised Facilities
The refurbishment has included several upgrades aimed at improving both comfort and sustainability. The refuge now features:
- A new medical room.
- A modernised electrical system powered by solar energy.
- An upgraded water treatment system.
- Accommodation for up to 40 guests.

A Long-Awaited Return
The reopening comes around a year later than originally planned. When refurbishment works were approved in 2024, the refuge had been expected to reopen during 2025. However, the project took longer than anticipated, with the first guests now due to arrive on 20th August 2026.
Describing the reopening as "a milestone", Rosa Dávila said the return of the Altavista Refuge marks an important step in improving facilities for walkers and mountaineers visiting Teide National Park.
The refuge has long been popular with hikers wanting an early start for the final ascent to the summit of Mount Teide, allowing them to experience sunrise from Spain's highest point while reducing the need for a pre-dawn climb from lower elevations.
