An 84-year-old tourist has died after being targeted in a suspected dating app robbery in Maspalomas, with two people now arrested in Tenerife. Police say the case exposes a disturbing pattern of criminals preying on older visitors in the Canary Islands.

The victim, who was staying in an apartment in the popular south Gran Canaria resort, arranged to meet a man he believed was seeking a social encounter. Investigators say the suspect instead used the meeting as a setup to steal from him.

During the encounter, the suspect allegedly tried to take valuables from the tourist. When the victim realised what was happening,  he tried to stop him from leaving. A struggle broke out, ending with the man being pushed, falling, and suffering a fatal head injury.

The 23-year-old suspect fled the island after the incident and went into hiding in Tenerife. Police tracked him down and arrested him yesterday (Wednesday), just as he is believed to have resumed using dating apps to target further victims.

Officers also detained his 44-year-old partner in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Investigators are now working to establish whether she played an active role in the crimes or helped cover them up.

Police believe the pair used dating apps to lure older men, particularly tourists, into private meetings before stealing cash and valuables. In one previous case linked to the suspect, a victim is thought to have lost around €20,000.

Both suspects remain in custody and have appeared before a judge via video link, as the investigation continues. Officers are examining whether more victims could come forward.
