A new case of animal abandonment has shocked Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, where several newborn puppies were found dumped inside a box in a ravine. The discovery has pushed the local animal shelter to issue an urgent plea for public help as its facilities reach breaking point.

The puppies were found in the Barranco de Tirajana, a natural area within the municipality, after the Local Police received a report and activated the emergency protocol. Officers ensured the animals were immediately collected and transferred to the Municipal Animal Protection Centre, where they are now receiving basic care.

However, staff say the situation is “critical”, with the shelter completely full and unable to take in more animals without the support of foster families. The puppies are still at nursing age and require round-the-clock attention that the overwhelmed centre is struggling to provide.

The centre explained through its official channels that it is operating at maximum capacity, making it increasingly difficult to give abandoned animals the personalised care they need, especially newborn litters that require specialist feeding and continuous monitoring.

Authorities are urging anyone able to foster, adopt, or provide information to contact the Municipal Animal Protection Centre of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, or send a WhatsApp message to 659 58 94 41.
