2.9 magnitude earthquake recorded between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura

An earthquake of 2.9 magnitude was registered by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) yesterday (Sunday) in an area known as "El Banquete" between the islands of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

The epicentre was recorded at a depth of 8 kilometres below the seabed and the IGN confirmed that there are no records of it being felt by the population.

In addition, there was another earthquake yesterday morning of intensity 2.0 on the Richter scale between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, and two others of 1.7 magnitude recorded on the island of Tenerife, in Arico and in Guía de Isora.

The IGN continually monitors seismic activity in the Canary Islands, as there is always a lot of micromovement due to the tectonic plates we sit on and the volcanic fabrication of the archipelago.
