The National Police have carried out a major anti-drug operation in the Canary Islands, confirming the arrest of 15 people so far, including the well-known figure “José el del Buque.”
According to the Government’s delegate in the Canaries, Anselmo Pestana, the main suspect handed himself in to police “due to the pressure of the investigation,” which has already led to a number of “significant arrests.”
Pestana explained that the case remains under investigation by the National Court and is currently subject to a secrecy order, meaning further arrests cannot be ruled out. “It is an operation that is still in progress, and it is not yet clear how far it may go,” he told reporters.
Background of the main suspect
The suspect known as “José el del Buque” had already been in the headlines earlier this year. In March 2025, he was caught up in a shocking case when his wife and son were kidnapped from their luxury villa in El Salobre, in the south of Gran Canaria.
Authorities’ response
The delegate of the Government praised the outcome of the operation, describing it as “very important” in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the archipelago. He highlighted the joint efforts of the Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional, which he said are producing “positive results” against organised crime.
This latest action underlines the Canary Islands’ role as a key route targeted by international drug networks, and the determination of Spanish authorities to dismantle them.
