€100,000 worth of fake sportswear seized at ferry port in Gran Canaria

Authorities in Gran Canaria have intercepted a major shipment of counterfeit sportswear worth around €100,000, dealing a serious blow to the island’s black-market trade.

The seizure took place at the port of Agaete, where officers from the Customs Surveillance Unit of the Tax Agency and the Canary Islands Police stopped a van arriving on a ferry from Tenerife. Inside, they discovered 850 fake sports kits of top international brands, destined for sale at the popular Jinámar street market.

The bust followed weeks of surveillance after investigators uncovered evidence that the suspect had been regularly transporting fake merchandise from Tenerife to Gran Canaria. Acting swiftly, officers set up a checkpoint at the port and arrested the man as soon as he disembarked.

In addition to the vast haul of counterfeit goods, officers also confiscated nearly €1,800 in cash found in the suspect’s possession.

The man was detained on suspicion of violating industrial property laws. He was later released after questioning, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Counterfeit goods are a persistent problem for authorities, undermining legitimate businesses and posing potential risks to consumers. Officials have vowed to maintain pressure on illegal traders and continue cracking down on these activities across the Canary Islands.
