A 3.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded between Tenerife and Gran Canaria on Monday evening and was felt by residents in parts of Tenerife, according to reports from the National Geographic Institute (IGN).

The tremor struck at 5:57pm with its epicentre located in the Atlantic Ocean between the two islands at a depth of 27 kilometres, in an area known as the Inmedio Volcano.

The IGN reported that the earthquake was felt with an intensity of II in the municipality of Güímar, meaning some people indoors noticed slight shaking, but no damage or injuries have been reported.

Activity follows recent Teide seismic swarm

The latest earthquake comes just days after the IGN detected another seismic swarm beneath Mount Teide, during which more than 1,600 small earthquakes were recorded over a two-day period.

Although yesterday's tremor occurred between Tenerife and Gran Canaria rather than beneath Teide itself, the IGN regularly records seismic activity in this area. Most of these earthquakes are too small or too deep to be noticed by the public.

Similar event earlier this year

In February, a stronger magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck between the two islands at a depth of around 10 kilometres. That tremor was felt across several municipalities in both Tenerife and Gran Canaria, reaching a maximum intensity of III–IV, but also caused no significant damage.

Experts continue to stress that seismic activity is a normal feature of the Canary Islands' volcanic geology. The IGN and the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) continue to closely monitor activity across the archipelago.

At present, there is no indication that the latest earthquake represents an increased volcanic risk, and the monitoring agencies have not changed the current volcanic alert levels.
