The coast of the Canary Islands has once again been the scene of a reckless incident during an official coastal weather warning, a situation that could easily have once again ended in tragedy.
A video shared by Canarias 1500 Km de Costa has highlighted, yet again, the disregard some visitors show toward basic safety rules near the sea.
Images captured by Paco Ortiz Santana show a group of tourists near the Faro de Sardina del Norte, in Gáldar (Gran Canaria), who had ignored warnings and gone through the protective fencing designed to keep people away from the area’s dangerous cliffs, which have a drop of more than 20 metres at this point.
The footage shows the group standing on a hazardous rocky ledge when a powerful wave crashes into the cliff face, sending a surge of water across the platform and sparking visible panic among the group.
“Once again, lives are put at risk by ignoring safety barriers at one of the most dangerous points on our coastline,” the organisation warned.
These behaviours not only endanger the individuals involved, but also place additional strain on emergency services, who would be forced to respond under highly dangerous conditions should an accident occur.
