A terrible accident in Corralejo (Fuerteventura) in which, now, eight people were injured when a car ploughed through the packed terrace of a bar yesterday (Thursday), has been caught on film by a surveillance camera outside the shop that it eventually crashed into and came to a stop.

The rental vehicle, being driven by an English tourist, who police have confirmed has tested negative for drugs and alcohol, was travelling along the main Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Corralejo when it suddenly left the road and ran over several people who were on the terrace of a cafeteria injuring eight people, five of them seriously.

The most seriously injured are a four-month-old baby, two women aged 18 and 49, and two men aged 40 and 43, who have been transferred to the Fuerteventura General Hospital, except for the 18-year-old woman and the baby who were flown by helicopter to the Gran Canaria for specialist treatment.

A five-year-old girl and two men aged 44 and 50 were also treated at the scene but were transferred to the island's hospital in Puerto Rosario with various ‘moderate’ injuries.

Five ambulances, two medical helicopters, the La Oliva fire brigade, Guardia Civil, Local Police, two paediatricians, two doctors and two nurses from the Corralejo Health Centre were all dispatched to the scene of the accident.

The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, has expressed his deep "dismay" over the accident, saying: “Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event. We are working closely with the relevant authorities to clarify what happened and provide support to the victims and their families at this difficult time.”

The reason why the vehicle veered from the road and crashed into the terrace is still being investigated.
