Tragedy as surfer dies on Fuerteventura's coast

A surfer tragically lost his life on Thursday afternoon while riding the waves at Punta Blanca beach in La Oliva, Fuerteventura, after a swift rescue effort by fellow surfers and emergency responders.

At approximately 4:00pm, the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert reporting that a man had been pulled from the water by other surfers.

The victim was found in cardiac arrest, and immediate resuscitation efforts were initiated by those at the scene, including a doctor and a nurse who happened to be nearby.

Emergency services, including ambulances, a medical helicopter, and local health centre staff, rushed to the location given, but despite advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts, their efforts were in vain, and the surfer’s death was confirmed at the scene.

Local police assisted with emergency coordination, while the Guardia Civil undertook the necessary legal proceedings and guarded the body until a coroner gave permission for it to be removed for official identification and an autopsy.

The tragic event serves as a sombre reminder of the risks associated with water sports and the importance of swift emergency response in such situations.
