Thousands of families across the Canary Islands have welcomed confirmation of the 2026/2027 student grant scheme, with support of up to €2,700 available for post-16 education.
The funding, provided by the Ministry of Education, is aimed at helping students continue their studies and avoid dropping out due to financial pressures, particularly important in the islands, where travel and living costs can be higher.
The grants cover a wide range of studies, including sixth form (Bachillerato), vocational training (FP), and courses in arts, sports and languages. Rather than a single payment, the support is made up of different elements depending on each student’s circumstances.
The largest payment (up to €2,700) is for students who need to move away from home during term time, helping cover rent and living expenses.
Other fixed amounts include:
- Up to €1,700 based on household income
- A basic grant of €300 (or €350 for basic vocational training students)
- Extra payments of €50 to €125 for strong academic results
Students should note that receiving the income-based grant means they cannot also claim the basic grant.
There is also a variable amount, calculated using a formula that takes into account both academic performance and household income.
Applications must be completed online via the official government platform. Students are advised to check their email regularly to avoid missing important updates or requests for documents.
To qualify, applicants must meet income thresholds and maintain minimum attendance and academic performance.
In a further change this year, higher artistic studies will now be treated in line with university grants, simplifying the process for those students.
