Two new homeowners in Lanzarote were left shocked after discovering a large cannabis plantation inside an abandoned property they had recently purchased.
The discovery was made today (Wednesday) in the scattered rural area of Güime, in the municipality of San Bartolomé. According to reports, the buyers had only recently acquired the house and entered the property for the first time when they uncovered the illegal grow operation.
The Guardia Civil arrived and found around 120 cannabis plants inside the property. Officers have confirmed that an investigation is now underway.
At this stage, no arrests have been made, and there are currently no suspects linked to the plantation. Police say enquiries remain ongoing as they try to establish who was responsible for cultivating the plants inside the abandoned house.
Cannabis plantations are occasionally uncovered in vacant or isolated properties across the Canary Islands, often due to their hidden locations and easy access to electricity supplies.
Residents and property buyers are advised to report any suspicious activity linked to abandoned buildings or unusual electrical installations to the authorities.
