Man killed after car plunges down embankment in Gran Canaria
A 65-year-old man has died after his car plunged down an embankment late last night (Sunday) in the municipality of Telde, Gran Canaria. The violent crash left the vehicle overturned in a hard-to-access area, trapping the driver beneath it.
The fatal accident occurred on Avenida Joan y Víctor Jara, in the Valle de Jinámar area. The Canary Islands’ emergency coordination centre, Cecoes 112, received the alert at around 11.15 pm, reporting that a car had come off the road and fallen down a steep drop.
Emergency services were immediately sent to the roadside, but despite their rapid response, paramedics could do nothing to save the driver, who was found trapped beneath the vehicle with injuries so severe that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Firefighters from the Consorcio de Emergencias de Gran Canaria worked to stabilise the overturned car and carry out the difficult recovery of the victim’s body. Officers from the Local Police also attended, securing the area and opening an investigation.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are now being examined by the relevant authorities, who are working to determine how and why the crash happened.
