Man arrested after threatening his family with large knife and barricading himself inside their home in Gran Canaria
A man was arrested on Sunday night in Gran Canaria after locking himself inside his home and threatening his partner and child with a large kitchen knife, according to a press release from the Guardia Civil.
Officers from both the Guardia Civil and the Policía Canaria were dispatched at around 8:30pm following emergency calls reporting a violent argument inside the property in Agüimes.
When agents arrived, they found the man had barricaded the front door from the inside, preventing his family from exiting while threatening to kill them if they tried. He also made repeated throat-slitting gestures from a window and warned officers he would take his own life if they attempted to approach him.
According to the report, the suspect, who has previous records for similar incidents, was extremely agitated. As officers tried to negotiate with him, he began actively self-harming, cutting his wrists and pressing the tip of the knife to his neck.
Police were eventually forced to break into the property, and managed to safely disarm and restrain him before medical personnel treated him in an ambulance and transferred him to hospital under custody.
Two blood-stained knives used in the incident were seized at the scene. The case will now be presented to the duty court in Telde.
